To Joan & her daughters,

I'm sorry for the passing of Oliver. We are thinking about you, you're in our thoughts.
And we know it's a hard pill to swallow. Mao Tse-tung said something about death. Some
people's deaths are as light as a feather, and other's are as heavy as Mount Tai.
Oliver's was like Mount Tai. We love you all. Strength and courage.

So, after a few dozen attempts I'm just gonna post my sentiments as best I can. My biggest
problem in doing such is referring to Oliver in anything but present tense. I can admit that I have
some what avoided Oliver recently do to my demons that may have been all too familiar to him. How
foolish. I've turned to Oliver for advice on major issues, as I have looked at him as
surrogate dad in my early adult hood after having it plainly explained that I did NOT know it all.
Fortunately for myself, as well as a host of others, we can always remember him for what he gave to
us in terms of sincerity and enlightenment.

To all those who knew Oliver Hirsch so much better than I did, I want to express my sincerest
sympathies, but I also want to let you know how jealous I am of the time that you shared with him.
From the first time I met him, while taking his class at NYU, I was always looking for excuses to
talk to him, certainly to hear his advice on the art world, but more importantly, to delve into his
views of the real world. I will always remember an afternoon I spent with him under the guise of
working on my thesis, but in all honesty, I was there to hear the stories of his triumphs in
standing up for what he believed in. He truly was an individual who has left a mark on the world,
and affected all those who knew him with his profound honesty and passion. Whether you worked with
him every day, spoke to him occasionally or were lucky enough to spend one single afternoon shooting
the breeze, Oliver left an inextinguishable impression that will be missed.

Oliver watched me grow up along with his daughter, Jennifer, from the time I was 16. He and his
family's political views, staunchly different from the ones my family had instilled in me prior
to the age of 16, was a turning point for me in many ways. Singing background vocals in the studio
with Jenn for a couple of Sturm & Twang recordings, as well as having a front row seat for most
of their performances, added mental and political depth to my already well-cemented love of music.
Oliver was a real part of my life, however fleeting it may now seem, and he always treated me with
the utmost respect and for that I hold him in the highest regard. I not only offer his daughters,
Marcia, Joan, Chris, and the rest of his family my deepest condolences, but I also offer my love and
respect for a man who was truly remarkable in every sense of the word.

Comment (Fri Jan 26, 2007):
My sincere condolences on the passing of Oliver. He was given the gift of life and accepted this
responsibility with humanity and kindness that left us with a society that shines brighter and feels
warmer for many, many people. Now, he was asked to return this gift of life and that comes at a
great loss to all that new him, but he suffers from his illness no longer. We all know in our hearts
the many different ways he will be missed.

Love and healing to all,
Dwight Primiano
